Beyond the Basics

We are often asked about things we may cover during our on driving courses that are not part of the driving test. Here are a few examples:

Guidance on changing tyres, bulbs, and handling tricky parking spots

During your driving Course, we are happy to help with any unusual traffic conditions/arrangements where you live or work if you need help with them. You may live on a narrow, no-through road or have a tight parking space - let us help you out with that! Our system is designed to shape you into a better, more confident driver.

How do I start my driving journey?

To start your driving lessons, call us on 07812377119.

Your call will be answered by a fully qualified driving instructor, with nearly 20 years of experience. We will answer your queries and if you are happy, we will organise your driving lessons with the nearest SuperDriver Driving Instructor local to you. At busy times, if we are not available, we may ask an alternative driving school to contact you. Either way, we will help you out in any way we can.

Our cars include the Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta, Cupra, Ford Focus, Mini, Renault Zoe, Peugeot 208, and Kia Picanto. All have dual controls to keep you safe!

We work 7 days a week, into the evenings and are DVSA-approved and CRB-checked. Our driving courses are delivered on a one-to-one basis, we find that is the most productive way, but we will allow you to invite (with notice) a friend, sibling, parent or even your child to sit in the back and watch. This is after all real driving, isn't it?

I've never driven before -

What will happen on my first lesson?

When you book a with SuperDriver, your Instructor will arrive at the agreed time. Don't be nervous, be excited! After brief introductions, we will ask to see your driving licence (photocard) and will ask you to pay in advance for your driving lesson.

We will then check your eyesight, asking you to read a car number plate from 20 metres away. If you can see the required distance, we will drive you to the nearest safe location to start your driving course.Then, we'll swap seats and begin with learning the controls and lead onto the routines for moving away and stopping. Your instructor has dual controls and can help you to brake and change gear. We cannot stop you from braking, so rest assured that we won't venture off the quieter roads until we are both confident with your driving abilities!

If your instructor is happy things are going well and enough for you to drive home, then you shall. Your objective for the first driving lesson is to understand the controls, be able to move away/stop and drive home.

How quickly can I learn to drive?

This depends on you, your location, the stage you are at now and your willingness to do homework. A quick Google search suggests a complete driving beginner, on average, requires 45 hours of driving lessons, with a further 20 or so hours with friends or family. You may need less, you may need more.

How quickly will you pick up driving? If you have had lessons prior to contacting us, we will need to assess you before estimating how many hours you need. Rest assured we will not ask you to train for more hours than you need. Then when you are ready, it's driving test time. Check our practical test tips here.

Know the format: You'll be tested on eyesight, vehicle safety questions, general driving, reversing manoeuvres, and independent driving.
Mock tests are gold: Simulate the real thing with our instructor to get used to test conditions.
Sleep well: A solid night’s rest helps you stay sharp and calm.

🕹️ During the Test

Mirror–Signal–Manoeuvre: Make this your mantra. Examiners love clear mirror checks.
Stay calm—recover smoothly and carry on.
Don’t assume you’ve failed: Even with a few mistakes, you can still pass.
Ask for repetition: If you don’t understand an instruction, politely ask the examiner to repeat it.
